Our team of researchers and volunteers will facilitate and promote a nuanced understanding of how millets—known to be climate-smart—can help tackle the climate crisis. The Millet Climate & Policy Lab will be responsible for driving in-depth research, laying the fundamentals for The Millet Revival Project.
We are looking to engage with:
- Producers, by mapping challenges experienced by farmers during processing, growing, demand, supply, and pricing of millets.
- Support the Editorial Lab through research and date for the stories and features explored.
- Organisations operating at the state level, such as NESFAS and OMM, to create blueprints of ways of incorporating millets into the Indian food system, improving agroecology structures, and documenting existing challenges and corresponding mitigation strategies.
- Policy & Governance, by identifying gaps in existing policy and methods to fill said gaps through policy recommendation.
The outcomes of the lab involve an evolving research database; articles on the intersections of millets, culture, society and politics; events such as Beyond The Plate to facilitate in depth discussions around the various facets of the millet landscape. We are also working towards identifying how the policy landscape around millets in India, identify existing bottlenecks and suggest solutions.

About the Role
In collaboration with the team and the CPL lead, you will conduct in-depth research on the various aspects of millets’ potential as climate-smart solutions. Your skills in data collection and critical thinking will allow us to understand the complex networks of millet processing, growing practices, demand, supply, and pricing, as well as adjacent policy systems.Your interactions with stakeholders from across millet production spaces will deeply inform the lab’s research and policy endeavours, such as the creation of blueprints and recommendations for incorporating millets into state-led initiatives. Your commitment to meaningful engagement with these stakeholders and communication skills will provide nuance and fresh perspectives to the project’s editorial endeavours.
You will also be responsible for researching existing policy and governance gaps to ensure that any policy recommendations aimed at promoting sustainable millet consumption and addressing agro-ecological challenges are truly informative, in-depth, and cognizant of context in their propositions. Your research efforts will also inform the maintenance of a real-time database that serves as a valuable resource for academics and policymakers. You will have to facilitate in-depth discussions through events like “Beyond The Plate” that allow us to foster a live discursive space around millets and their policy implications.
Your passion for sustainability, climate-smart solutions, and the role of millets in addressing climate challenges coupled with your interest in research, policy analysis, and contributing to positive change in the food and agriculture sector will be instrumental in helping us achieve the goals of MRP.
