THE LOCAVORE GUIDES
MARCH 2025
Over the next month, for our quarterly theme at the Local Food Club (LFC)—Supporting Your Food Producers—we’re inviting the LFC community across India to help document local food producers region by region to build a shared, community-sourced repository that spotlights the people behind our food.
Contribute to the Repository
When we don’t know who produces the food we eat, it becomes just another product.
But when we know even a little—a name, a farm, a face—food begins to feel like a relationship. We start to understand seasons better, recognise the labour behind everyday ingredients, and realise the value of supporting producers who work with care.
Across India, there are countless farmers, fishers, millers, and small food producers doing thoughtful work that often goes undocumented. This repository is a small attempt to change that.
If there is a food producer anywhere in India you trust, we invite you to share their details with us. Think: farmers, fishers, millers, dairy producers, seed conservators, and small food processors. This could be someone you buy from regularly, someone whose work you’ve taken the time to understand, or simply someone who has adopted ethical, sustainable practices toward food production.
Fill out the form below and help us document the people behind our food.
Disclaimer: The repository will be published on The Locavore’s website. We will review submissions carefully before publishing. Not all entries may be included—we are prioritising clarity, responsibility, and alignment with LFC values.
Who Do We Mean by a Local Food Producer?
When we say local food producer, we don’t simply mean any food business located near you. We mean individuals, families, collectives, or small enterprises who are directly involved in producing food. ‘Local’ doesn’t only refer to geography. It refers to relationship and transparency too—producers whose work you can meaningfully understand, even if they are small, not widely known, or not formally certified.
Some examples include:
-Farmers growing seasonal vegetables or native grains
-Fishers bringing in their catch from small boats
-Dairy farmers working with local herders
-Millers grinding flour from identifiable farms,
-Beekeepers producing raw honey
-Neighbourhood oil presses sourcing seeds from nearby growers
If you can name the person—or collective—understand how they work, and explain why their practices feel thoughtful and responsible, they likely belong in this repository.
At The Locavore, we collaborate with farmers, fishers, millers, dairy producers, and seed conservators across the country—people whose work sustains our food systems. You can check out some of our work to better understand who a ‘Producer’ is, here.
This effort is part of an ongoing engagement, anchored in our first quarterly theme for 2026: Supporting Your Food Producers.
From January to March 2026, the theme looks beyond the plate to the people behind it—farmers, fishers, foragers, millers, bakers, and processors. Through engagements such as this, we hope to explore everyday ways to support food producers through more informed choices, deeper learning, and thoughtful advocacy.
