OUR VISION

The Local Food Club isn’t just a series of potlucks. It’s the seed of something much larger—a growing movement rooted in food, community, and care. We dream of a future where every neighbourhood has its own Local Food Club—whether in bustling cities or small towns—where people know each other by name, and meals are a reason to gather, not a transaction.

Students run LFCs on campuses, swapping recipes from home, learning from one another, and building a new culture of food that’s joyful, sustainable, and collaborative. Bookshops, cafés, and gardens open their doors once a month to host these gatherings—not as events, but as traditions. Elders share forgotten techniques and family wisdom, while young people bring fresh energy and questions to the table.

Farmers, foragers, chefs, vendors, and home cooks sit side by side, sharing food and lived experiences—their triumphs and struggles, and the flavours that shaped them. Lost recipes find their way back, passed on through conversation and taste. Stories are archived, not as nostalgia, but as nourishment—ensuring our regional culinary traditions don’t vanish.

Through Local Food Clubs, we hope to create more opportunities for communities to not just celebrate these changemakers, but  collaborate with them, amplify their work, and collectively make an impact at a local level.

Real change doesn’t always need a big stage. Sometimes, it starts in a circle of strangers, sharing a meal—and deciding to do more, together.

This is the world we’re working towards. Because we believe that food is more than just sustenance—it’s a powerful tool for change, if only we come together with care, curiosity, and intention.

And it starts one potluck at a time.

OUR MISSION

The spirit behind the Local Food Club by The Locavore rests on a few core intentions:

MAKE ROOM AT THE TABLE

Create warm, inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome—sharing meals, stories, and memories. Each gathering is a chance to learn from one another through food, conversation, and playful, hands-on activities.

CELEBRATE DIVERSITY

Celebrate and preserve India’s diverse culinary histories by highlighting lesser-known regional recipes and seasonal ingredients.

RECONNECT WITH FOOD

Help us understand where our food comes from—by deepening awareness of the people, ecosystems, and cultures that shape what we eat.

WHY IT MATTERS

Because Food isn’t Just What’s On Our Plates

In cities and towns across India, more and more people are asking:

Where does my food come from? Who grows it? What traditions have shaped it? And what can I do to preserve and celebrate it?

At The Locavore, we’ve spent the last few years diving deep into these questions. What we’ve seen is this: food can spark joy—but it can also spark change.

Because We’re Disconnected

We live in a time of growing distance—from our food, and from each other

Supermarkets have replaced sabzi mandis. Family recipes are forgotten.
Climate change is transforming how food is grown, cooked, and eaten.

Local Food Clubs bring us back into relationship—with food, with memory, with the people.

Because Our Culinary Traditions Need Holding

India’s food culture is vast, and often passed down orally—through taste, not text.
But many of these traditions are fading, especially in urban spaces.

By sharing stories, ingredients, and memories in an LFC gathering, we keep this knowledge alive.

Local Food Clubs turn everyday cooks into culture-bearers.

Because People Crave Connection

We’ve seen it again and again: strangers walk in, and leave as friends. In a world that feels increasingly isolated, a simple meal shared once a month can make all the difference—where joy and conversation can go hand in hand.

Local Food Clubs create small, steady spaces of belonging.

Because Most Food Spaces Aren’t Truly Inclusive

Let’s be honest—too many food experiences today are behind paywalls or feel intimidating to walk into. Tasting menus, curated events, closed-door dinners… they often leave people out.

We believe that food should be a force for inclusion—not exclusion. Each one of us deserves a seat at the table.

Local Food Clubs are free, informal, and for everyone.

Because Local Food is a Climate Solution

Eating seasonal and sourcing locally can reduce food miles and carbon impact. When we support farmers, foragers, and small producers doing good through food, we build more sustainable systems.

Local Food Clubs help create awareness and advocate around these choices—not through lectures, but through taste.

Because We Will Always Need Each Other

If you’ve ever wondered how to get involved—this is where it begins.

At a table in your city, with food you care about, and people you can grow with.

Whether you join, host, or help start a new club—there’s always space for you.

FAQs

1. Why does the Local Food Club focus so much on local food?

Because local food connects us to the land, seasons, and people around us. It’s better for the planet, often fresher and more flavourful, and it supports small farmers and producers who are often left out of larger food systems.

2. What do you mean by #DoingGoodThroughFood? What kind of good?

It can be simple things—like reducing waste by bringing leftovers home, or sharing ingredients from your garden. Or bigger efforts—like helping someone rediscover their regional food traditions, supporting farmers near you, or starting a local food education project with your LFC.

3. Do I need to know a lot about food or sustainability to be part of this?

Not at all. You don’t need to be an expert—just someone who cares. The Local Food Club is about learning, sharing, and showing up. Curiosity is enough.

4. Why are LFC gatherings free and open to all?

We believe that food should never be a barrier—it should be a bridge. That’s why our events are informal and free of cost. Everyone deserves to feel welcome, to share, and to belong.

5. How does the Local Food Club reflect The Locavore’s mission?

The Locavore is about building more thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable food systems in India. LFC is how we bring that to life on the ground—through people meeting in real life, sharing real meals, and creating local impact.

6. What does supporting local actually look like in an LFC?

It could mean cooking with seasonal produce from your area. Or inviting a local farmer to speak. Or sourcing cutlery from a neighbourhood shop. Supporting local is about paying attention to who and what surrounds you—and choosing them when you can.

7. What kind of community projects might come out of this?

Each LFC evolves in its own way. Some might start composting initiatives. Others might organise cooking classes with elders or build awareness around food access. The idea is to begin with shared meals—and let the community imagine what comes next.

8. What are you doing to make these spaces safe and respectful?

We have clear community guidelines rooted in empathy, consent, and inclusivity. Every Host and Super Locavore is trained to hold space with care, and we’ve set up support systems in case any issue arises.

9. What if my food culture or identity has felt feels underrepresented?

That’s exactly why we’re here. We want the Local Food Club to be a place where underrepresented food traditions, stories, and identities are not just welcomed—but centred. If you haven’t had a place at the table before, we’d love to try and make space for it now.
