"It’s eaten like Bhel!"

LFC Bengaluru| November 2025

Fresh green jowar (ponkh/hurda) is a tender winter millet enjoyed like bhel across Maharashtra and Gujarat. Photo by Siddhi.
A little known, but well loved coming-of-winter snack.

Siddhi: Saw this in Mumbai… green jowar and green wheat.. .wheat I saw for the first time…

Abha: Green jowar is called Ponkh and is eaten like bhel! A really delicious snack that welcomes the winter!

Tanya: I’ve heard of this! Never seen it in Bangalore

Karishma: I agree… is this available in Bangalore?

Devayani: Yes, Millet Amma has ponkh. I’ve been ordering from them the last couple of years now and it is good.

Asha: Farmizen has it, when in season.

Siddhi: Yeah, in Marathi we call it hurda… and many places in Maharashtra have hurda parties.

Abha: Can get it at Farmizen. Make it with finely chopped green chillies, coriander, lemon, salt and sev 🙂 Forgot to mention, we pair this with hot jalebis and fresh saunf.

Siddhi: Wow! This is new!

Devayani: We have it roasted with peanut chutney.
