Spotlighting Shani Bazaar

An evening spent at the sprawling Shani Bazaar in Vasant Kunj offers exceptional seasonal produce amid a labyrinth of stalls lit up with neon lights.

Vaishnavi: I stay in Vasant Kunj and have been going regularly to Shani Bazaar, which goes on from evening to midnight every Saturday. The later you go, the cheaper the deals on the vegetables and fruits. You can find everything here: meat, fish, spices, utensils, crockery, clothes. It’s a labyrinth of stalls illuminated with neon lights in crowded lanes. I love it and try to go every week.

Manisha: Please share where is this exactly. Looks like so much fun!

Vaishnavi: I also got my blunt knives sharpened by a bhaiya there. So glad some of them are still around! It’s in Kishangarh, right in front of Fortis Hospital in B1, Vasant Kunj.

Vaishnavi: You mostly get seasonal produce here. I have seen quite a few varieties of edible flowers this spring. This time I got these kachnar/orchid flower buds. Please share if any of you have any recipe ideas for these.

Anita: What time did you go?

Vaishnavi: When I went around 10 pm, the vendor was wrapping up his stall. That’s why I bagged the steep closing price. If you go around 11:30 pm, I have seen some stalls selling four pieces of avocados at ₹100.

Shahana: I live in Vasant Kunj and I’ve never been [to the bazaar]. May your biryani aloo be always cooked through, thank you for this.

Vaishnavi: Happy to take you guys. There are lots of food stalls in the market as well. There is also a Naga restaurant in Kishangarh which is closer to the market that’s open all night.

I made a few condiments over the weekend to use up the strawberries. A compote, a jam, strawberry cheong, and a hot sauce.

Vaishnavi: Just found this map of weekly markets in Delhi which has a mention of the Shani Bazaar in Kishangarh: https://www.wiego.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/weekly-markets-in-dehli_0.pdf
