LONGING FOR HOME FOOD
Childhood Friend Priti and Aditi Share a Recipe for Popti
June 2026
Priti and Aditi share a recipe for Popti, where fragrant Bhamburda leaves are packed into an earthen pot, sealed, and slow-cooked over an open fire.
A traditional preparation from Alibag, Popti is cooked over an open fire without the use of oil. For Preeti Mangesh Mhage, it is a dish tied to family rituals. She was introduced to Popti as a child in her family home and, after marriage, continued making it with her new family. Listen to her share memories of preparing Popti every 8–10 days during the winter months, when the beans are plentiful and families gather around the fire to cook it.
