Products We Love

Women are often underrecognised as food producers, even in the very products they make. Over the years, The Locavore has partnered with several producers across the country who adopt ethical, sustainable practices toward food production. Here is a selection of products in which women comprise a key part of the workforce.

Black Raisins

Juicy, sun-dried black raisins, with a pleasantly tart sweetness.

Brown Raisins

Umrani Farms’ brown raisins are darker in colour than the commercially available golden raisins because they are sun-dried, and not chemically treated.

Gongura Sprinkle

A hand-pounded, intensely aromatic podi, combining the quintessential sorrel leaves with flavourful spices.

Jeera

These whole cumin seeds are complex, flowery, and almost citrusy in flavour. They are grown in sandy regions, under intense heat, which leads to a higher essential oil content.

Meetha Nimbu Pickle

This sweet and sour pickle—made using a heirloom recipe from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh—has thickly sliced lemon pieces along with whole spices like cumin, black pepper, peepal, brown cardamom, clove, to name a few.

Shatavari Murabba

A murabba-like preserve made by infusing antioxidant rich shatavari roots with wild forest honey.

Tur Dal

Grown without any chemicals, this unpolished split pigeon pea or tur dal is earthy and nutty in flavour, making it the perfect daily essential.

This curation is part of the Woman Farmer Project, a multimedia storytelling initiative led by The Locavore in partnership with the Doc Society Climate Story Kitchen.
