North East Society for Agroecology Support

Region:

Established in 2012 as a collaborative initiative between the Indigenous Partnership for Agrobiodiversity and Food Sovereignty and Slow Food International, the North East Society for Agroecology Support (NESFAS) is a Meghalaya-based organisation working to sustain Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems across the Northeast. It works primarily with Khasi-Jaintia, Garo, Karbi, and Biate communities across more than 200 villages in Meghalaya and Nagaland, and is led by a largely local team.

Its work spans agrobiodiversity documentation, initiatives for community school meals, forest management, fisheries, participatory video, and research on nutrition and dietary diversity. It treats Indigenous people’s knowledge systems as standing in dialogue with modern ideas. NESFAS has developed concrete programmes to expand economic opportunity for women and youth in the region. These include training 100 rural youth in East Khasi Hills as professional nature guides to support community-led ecotourism, and equipping women with skills in sustainable piggery management to turn smallholder pig-keeping into a viable enterprise.
