Founded in 2007 and based in Secunderabad, Telangana, Dhaatri is an organisation working with Adivasi communities across India at the intersection of ecological rights, gender justice, and governance. Its organisational principle is driven by the fact that the destruction of natural resources and the marginalisation of Adivasi women are intertwined; and that women’s tenurial rights over land and forest, participation in resource governance, and freedom from gender-based violence are conditions that reinforce each other and must be addressed together.
Dhaatri’s work focuses on supporting women to actively reclaim entitlements to land and forests that have historically been denied to them, building their participation in local governance institutions, and facilitating dialogue between communities and the state. It works with children and youth to interrupt cycles of intergenerational marginalisation and to facilitate the transmission of ecological knowledge across generations. The organisation’s Women’s Programme spans women-led natural resource conservation, biodiversity restoration, documenting foraging and traditional farming practices, community health, and the revival of forest-based livelihoods. Its team works closely with tribes across different states, such as the Sahariyas and the Gonds.
