Community Manager – Local Food Club
Role: Community Manager – Local Food Club
Reports to: Head of Strategy & Operations / Founder
Location: Remote
Employment Type: Full Time
At The Locavore, we believe food is a powerful way to build communities, nurture connection, and create long-lasting change. The Local Food Club (LFC) is our nationwide, community-led initiative that brings people together around local food cultures, seasonal ingredients, shared meals, and collective action.
As the Local Food Club grows (5500+ members) across cities, towns, neighbourhoods, and online spaces, we are looking for a Community Manager who can help keep this ecosystem active, welcoming, responsive, and meaningful. This is a community-facing role at its core. You will work closely with LFC members, Super Locavores, hosts, venues, volunteers, and other community contributors to support participation across WhatsApp groups, in-person meetups, events, and ongoing engagement formats.
A large part of this role will involve managing and moderating LFC’s WhatsApp communities. This means not only sending updates, but also listening closely, noticing patterns, responding thoughtfully, nudging conversations, identifying opportunities, and helping members feel seen and connected. It is a behind-the-scenes role that requires consistency, care, responsiveness, and a genuine belief in the value of community work.
Key Responsibilities
Community Building & Relationship Management
Build and nurture relationships with LFC members, Super Locavores, hosts, venues, and volunteers across cities.
Help members navigate the LFC ecosystem, including city WhatsApp groups, meetups, reading circles, events, and other participation formats.
Respond to community queries in a timely, warm, and clear manner.
Identify active members, potential hosts, and promising community contributors who can deepen LFC’s presence in different cities.
Maintain a strong sense of what is happening across the community and flag patterns, concerns, or opportunities to the internal Locavore team.
WhatsApp Engagement & Moderation
Manage and moderate LFC WhatsApp groups to ensure they remain active, safe, respectful, and welcoming.
Move beyond one-way announcements by encouraging conversation, participation, and thoughtful engagement around LFC’s themes.
Track questions, member requests, interesting exchanges, and recurring concerns across groups.
Nudge relevant conversations, share useful updates, and help connect members to the right groups, opportunities, and resources.
Respond quickly and sensitively to difficult or inappropriate conversations, escalating when needed.
Develop simple systems to check groups consistently through the day, without letting messages pile up or member requests get missed.
Develop a pipeline to share The Locavore’s work widely with LFC members such as stories, personal essays, recipes and more.
Meetups, Events & Community Engagement
Coordinate member-facing communication for LFC meetups, reading circles, workshops, and other community gatherings.
Work closely with Super Locavores, hosts, venue partners, and the internal LFC team to ensure events are well-supported.
Help improve the member journey before, during, and after gatherings, including sign-ups, reminders, follow-ups, and feedback.
Be proactive about sharing events and nudging participation in a way that feels personal and community-led, not transactional.
Support the team in identifying ways to make LFC’s quarterly themes more visible and participatory across WhatsApp and on-ground engagements.
Storytelling, Feedback & Community Insights
Surface interesting conversations, member stories, questions, recipes, reflections, and community moments from WhatsApp groups and meetups.
Support the editorial and digital teams in identifying stories or insights that can be shared more widely.
Gather feedback from members, Super Locavores, and hosts to improve the LFC experience.
Help track engagement across groups, events, and member journeys to inform planning.
Maintain organised records of community issues, member queries, moderation actions, and recurring patterns for internal review.
Candidate Attributes
We are looking for someone who:
Genuinely believes in the power of community and food as a way to bring people together.
Is excited by online community-building, especially on WhatsApp.
Understands that community work is often quiet, consistent, and behind the scenes.
Is proactive and quick to respond when conversations, member requests, or issues arise.
Has strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Can build trust with different kinds of people across cities, languages, and contexts.
Has the maturity to handle sensitive conversations with empathy and discretion.
Is comfortable with moderation, conflict resolution, and maintaining safe community spaces.
Is passionate about thinking strategically about engagement, not just execution.
Has some experience in community management, outreach, events, volunteering, or member engagement.
Is willing to attend or closely engage with LFC meetups and WhatsApp groups to understand the community from within.
Has a genuine interest in food, culture, sustainability, and local food systems.
Prior experience as an LFC member, host, Super Locavore, volunteer, or active participant in a community-led initiative is a strong plus.
Growth Opportunities
As Community Manager – Local Food Club, you will play an important role in shaping how The Locavore’s community grows, connects, and participates across India.
Over time, this role could evolve into a larger community leadership position, with deeper ownership of city networks, member engagement strategy, community campaigns, partnerships, and broader Locavore community initiatives.
This role offers the opportunity to help build one of The Locavore’s most ambitious long-term initiatives from the inside — not just by managing a community, but by helping it become more active, generous, and meaningful.
