Kerala Matta Rice

ORIGIN: Palakkad, Kerala

208  |  1 KG

A staple in Kerala, this semi-polished, parboiled Matta rice is nutty and has a uniquely chewy texture. It is also high in fibre.

You’ll be buying directly from the producer. The Locavore does not handle orders, payments, delivery, or customer support.

While Kerala Matta Rice is grown in Karnataka on huge contracted farms, Bio Basics only sources it from Kollengode, Palakkad, in Kerala in order to maintain agro-biodiversity and the character as well as quality of heritage grains.

Cook it the way you would rice for everyday meals, but allow for a little more water and time since it is a firmer grain. (We recommend pre-soaking it for about two hours before cooking!) It works especially well with dal, sambar, rasam, or curries, where its texture and flavour hold up well.

While farmers grow chemical-free food and conserve heritage grains, they lack a fair and sustainable market to sell such produce—Bio Basics was established to address this gap. Today, they source high-quality ingredients that are naturally grown and free from any chemical inputs from their network of organic farmers and farmer collectives from across nine states in India.
