About the Woman Farmer Project:
The Woman Farmer Project is a storytelling initiative by The Locavore that brings together early-career fellows to document the lives, knowledge systems, and lived experiences of women across food and ecological systems in India.
The films are short documentaries rooted in real people, regional contexts, and an ethics-first approach to storytelling. The films will be developed across three regions—Meghalaya (Khasi), Madhya Pradesh (Hindi), and Tamil Nadu (Tamil)—with each film rooted in its local context and language, and supported by region-specific editing and subtitling
About the Role:
The Video Editor will support the development of one short documentary film per region, working closely with the assigned fellow and under the guidance of The Locavore team and the Visual Storytelling Mentor.
This is an execution-focused, collaborative role. The editor will shape field footage into a coherent, well-paced film, while working within the narrative direction developed by the fellow and guided through mentorship.
Core Responsibilities:
1. Footage Organisation
Review and organise raw footage and audio
Sync and structure material for editing
Flag gaps or inconsistencies early
2. Editing & Assembly
Develop rough cuts based on the fellow’s narrative direction
Build sequences that reflect character, environment, and lived context
Refine structure, pacing, and flow across iterations
3. Feedback & Iteration
Incorporate feedback from:
Fellow
Visual Storytelling Mentor
The Locavore team
Strengthen narrative clarity and coherence through successive cuts
4. Language & Subtitling
Work with regional-language footage
Support subtitle syncing and integration
Collaborate to ensure accuracy of meaning and tone
5. Final Delivery
Prepare final cut aligned with approved narrative
Ensure technical quality (audio, visuals, subtitles)
Deliver files for publication and screenings
Working Model
- Fellow leads narrative direction
- Editor supports execution and assembly
- Mentor provides narrative and editorial guidance
- Final decisions rest with The Locavore
What This Role Will Not Be Responsible For:
The Video Editor will not:
define or independently change the core story direction
direct the film or lead narrative decisions
manage fellows or fieldwork
engage directly with partner organisations or communities
make final editorial or publishing decisions
Key Qualities
- Experience in documentary or non-fiction editing
- Sensitivity to real-world storytelling
- Comfort with regional language footage (mandatory)
- Ability to work in a feedback-driven, iterative process
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
Time Commitment
- Project-based per film
- Highest involvement during mid-July to mid-August
, with a concentrated editing and feedback cycle leading up to final delivery
Approx. 8–12 hours/week during active editing
Timeline & Phases
The engagement will span across the following phases:
June – Mid July (Field Phase):
Light involvement. Editors may review incoming footage, organise material, and prepare for the editing phase.
Mid July – Mid August (Editing Phase):
Primary phase of work. Editors will develop rough cuts, iterate through feedback, and work closely with fellows, the Visual Storytelling Mentor, and The Locavore team.
Target Delivery:
Final outputs are expected to be completed by mid-August 2026, requiring timely iteration and responsiveness during the editing phase.
