About The Role
The Assistant Projects Editor will support the Projects Editor in shaping, executing, and maintaining the editorial voice across all of The Locavore’s long-term initiatives—such as the Millet Revival Project, Mumbai Koli Project, Local Food Club etc, and others in development.
This is a hands-on, cross-functional editorial role. You’ll help with everything from research and field notes to editing drafts, coordinating with contributors, reviewing translations, managing publishing timelines, and supporting community-driven storytelling formats like zines, reels, explainers, and more.
This role is ideal for someone with strong writing and editing instincts, a deep interest in food systems, and the curiosity to learn and grow within a collaborative, impact-driven environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Editorial Support
- Assist the Projects Editor in editing stories across formats—interviews, photo essays, longform, explainers, field dispatches, etc.
- Review early drafts for structure, tone, and clarity; support headline and strap writing.
- Identify and widen The Locavore’s network of writers, photographers, researchers, and translators.
- Help maintain editorial consistency across all project-related communication and outputs.
Project Coordination
- Help manage publishing schedules, editorial pipelines, and content calendars in coordination with the Projects, Editorial, and Digital Media teams.
Support documentation during field visits, events (online and offline) or stakeholder conversations.
Research and Development
- Conduct research to support story development and context-building.
- Compile references, transcripts, fact-checks, and citations where needed.
- Track regional, seasonal, and cultural references to ensure depth and accuracy in storytelling.
Story Curation & Production
- Contribute to ideation and pitching of stories for each project.
- Help coordinate contributor timelines, interviews, and story sourcing from the field.
- Upload stories and recipes to the website, and track backend data on WordPress.
- Liaise with designers and digital team to support story packaging and multimedia formats.
Documentation and Archiving
- Maintain internal records of project stories, feedback rounds, publishing links, and archival backups.
- Assist in repurposing stories for social media, newsletters, and outreach decks.
Candidate Attributes
- Strong Editorial Fundamentals: Excellent command over grammar, structure, and narrative clarity.
- Highly Organised: Able to manage multiple stories and timelines simultaneously.
- Collaborative & Curious: Open to feedback, excited to learn from others, and willing to engage across teams.
- Research-Inclined: Comfortable diving into books, reports, field material, and stakeholder interviews.
- Detail-Oriented: Committed to accuracy, ethical storytelling, and editorial consistency.
Preferred Experience:
- 1–3 years of experience in editorial roles (including internships or freelance work) in media, digital publishing, NGOs, or academic institutions.
- Strong writing/editing samples—published or self-initiated.
- Comfort with Google Docs and editorial calendars.
- Interest in food systems, culture, biodiversity, or sustainability is a big plus.
